Chapter Seventeen

New York City

Wanda sat and looked out the window of her old office thinking, while she waited for Meka to get off the phone. There were so many variables that she needed to consider, too many things that could be affected by the Japanese consulate security’s investigation into the murders. If there was a chance that terrorists, Japanese or not, were involved, United States Home Land Security was informed and certainly monitoring the situation.

Wanda had spoken with Martin Marshall earlier in the day and without telling him too much, she let the congressman know to keep his ears open. Since they already had reservations, she had made arrangements to join him and his wife for dinner at Le Bernardin at eight to see if he’d heard anything.

There was also the partnership between Black, Martin, Wei Jiang and Oleg Mushnikov and their overseas investments that had to be protected. Then there was the matter of Wei and Oleg’s other businesses. Wanda knew that Wei Jiang had links to some Japanese secret societies and organized crime groups and Oleg, who refers to himself as ‘just a poor Russian trying to earn a living in your wonderful country’, was ex-KGB. Wanda had no idea what else Black was involved in with them.

But now, Wanda was there to talk to Meka about ways to insulate their assets from seizure. Before they were interrupted, Meka had told her that she already had some things in place. She set up a number of shell corporations without any active business operations, but with significant capital to buy their current assets.

“I’m sorry, Wanda,” Meka said when she hung up.

“Not a problem. I know how it is,” Wanda said and she did because it used to be her job.

“Where were we?”

“Moving money into off shore accounts,” Wanda said.

“Yes. Any assets and money sent offshore is always going to be more difficult to discover.”

“And much harder to seize,” Wanda said.

“Increasing the cash value of our insurance policies, bonds, mutual funds, the cash value in variable annuities and stocks is another thing we could do.”

“I had thought of Series EE savings bonds, and bearer municipal bonds, and then I woke up and remembered they’re government issued.”

“First thing they’ll take,” Meka laughed. “Converting cash into property, but that presents the same problem.”

“Right now we’re not at the point where we need to start implementing any of this, but it’s good to know that we’ve got something in place.

“It is, but the plain truth is that all this will do is slow them down,” Meka said.

“I know.”

“I have a shell corporation specially designed for the concealment of the true identities of our real companies. That is ready to go now, if need be. And another corporation set to act as a tax avoidance vehicle in place as well. But if the government comes and wants it, their gonna get it.”

Wanda laughed. “By that time it won’t matter to any of us, because we’ll either be long gone or in jail.”

“Count me in the long gone line,” Meka said.
